‘Dunkirk’ Will Be Widest 70mm Release In 25 Years

As Quentin Tarantino‘s “The Hateful Eight” prepared to hit cinemas, The Weinstein Company made a big push to help theaters show the film in the director’s preferred 70mm format. They found 70mm projectors, brought them back to life, and shipped them across the country, for what was then declared “the widest 70mm release in over 20 years.” Now, undoubtedly thanks to that groundwork, Christopher Nolan‘s upcoming “Dunkirk” is reaping the rewards.

The World War II film will be arriving on 125 screens across the country in 70mm, besting the 100 screens for Tarantino’s western. It marks the biggest 70mm release in 25 years; you’d probably have to look all the way back to Ron Howard‘s 1992 picture “Far and Away” for a rollout of a similar size. It’s definitely good news for fans who want to see the movie — shot in IMAX and 70mm — as the director intended, and if you think the format isn’t such a big deal, this handy visual guide makes it clear why the biggest screen possible is best.

Now that you’ve been convinced, the next question is where can you see the film in 70mm? Well, tickets are on sale now and “Dunkirk” will be screening in the biggest format possible in these locations.
