Greta Gerwig is currently on her victory lap during awards season. Sure, there’s still plenty of discussion about “Barbie” taking home a ton of awards, including Oscars, but you can just see the filmmaker enjoying every aspect of talking about her runaway hit that broke records and is the highest-grossing film of 2023. But that doesn’t mean the filmmaker isn’t looking ahead. What lies ahead for Gerwig is perhaps the biggest challenge of her career— “The Chronicles of Narnia.” And she understands the weight of that project.

Speaking on BBC Radio4, Greta Gerwig was asked about her thoughts as she goes into work on her Netflix adaptation of “The Chronicles of Narnia.” Based on C.S. Lewis’ timeless classic fantasy tale, Gerwig is actually on board to direct two films in the franchise. Other than that, it’s unclear what we might expect. For the filmmaker, she is aware of the size and scale of the ‘Narnia’ series, as well as just how important the story is for so many people around the world.
“I’m slightly in a place of terror because I really do have such reverence for ‘Narnia,’” Gerwig explained. “I loved ‘Narnia’ so much as a child. As an adult, C.S. Lewis is a thinker and a writer. I’m intimidated by doing this. It’s something that feels like a worthy thing to be intimidated by.”
She added, “As a non-British person, I feel a particular sense of wanting to do it correctly because it’s like when Americans do Shakespeare, there’s a slight feeling of reverence, as if maybe we should treat it with extra care. It is not our countryman.”

Again, we don’t really have much news about the ‘Naria’ franchise that Gerwig is spearheading. It’s assumed that after the “Barbie” awards season push, we’ll probably see more news about the filmmaker’s new project. Especially if filming is to begin later this year, which has been teased by Netflix.
If nothing else, the anticipation for her ‘Narnia’ adaptation has only grown after her “Barbie” success. No one expected “Barbie” to do nearly what it did, both critically and financially. So, it seems even silly at this point to try to guess what Gerwig can do with the fantasy franchise.
