Oppenheimer And Succession' Top 2024 SAG Awards Nominations

It took a minute, but Kumail Nanjiani and Issa Rae revealed the nominees for the 2024 Screen Actors Guild Awards on Instagram this morning, and this year’s nominees were dominated by familiar television shows and popular movies. Oh, and Netflix. Lots of Netflix nominees. Then again, the SAG Awards will be streamed for the first time on the service this year so perhaps that was in the back of the voter’s minds. Maybe.

In the film categories, “Oppenheimer” and “Barbie” topped all movies with four nominations. “American Fiction” and “Killers of the Flower Moon” earned three each. The Television nominees were dominated by “Succession” which took five nominations and “The Bear” and “Ted Lasso” which both landed four.

In the Ensemble for a Motion Picture category, the nominees were “American Fiction,” “Barbie,” “The Color Purple,” “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Oppenheimer.”

It should be noted that even in the expanded Best Picture nominee era, an ensemble nomination does not guarantee a Best Picture Oscar nomination. In 2023 and 2022, only four of the five ensembles earned a Best Picture nod. In 2021, only only two ensembles made it. In 2020 and 2019, just four made the Best Picture cut. In 2018 only three made it. In fact, the last time all five ensemble nominees landed a Best Picture nod was in 2015, almost 10 years ago.

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role features Bradley Cooper (“Maestro”), Colman Domingo (“Rustin”), Paul Giamatti (“The Holdovers”), Cillian Murphy (“Oppenheimer”), and Jeffrey Wright (“American Fiction”). The most surprising commission was Leonardo DiCaprio (“Killers of the Flower Moon”) while recent National Society of Film Critics winner Andrew Scott (“All of Us Strangers”) was snubbed.

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role saw Annette Bening (“Nyad”), Lily Gladstone (“Killers of the Flower Moon”), Carey Mulligan (“Maestro”), Margot Robbie (“Barbie”) and Emma Stone (“Poor Things”) all make the cut. Unexpected ommissions included Fantasia Barrino (“The Color Purple”), Sandra Huller (“Anatomy of a Fall”), Natalie Portman (“May December”), and Greta Lee (“Past Lives”).

In the supporting categories, SAG favorite Sterling K. Brown (“American Fiction”), Willem Dafoe (“Poor Things”), Robert DeNiro (“Killers of the Flower Moon”), Robert Downey, Jr. (“Oppenheimer”), and Ryan Gosling (“Barbie”) all earned nominations in the male category. Emily Blunt (“Oppenheimer”), Danielle Brooks (“The Color Purple”), Penelope Cruz (“Ferrari”), Jodie Foster (“Nyad”), and Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Holdovers”) were all honored. Snubs included Charles Melton (“May December), Julianne Moore (“May December”), Mark Ruffalo (“Poor Things”), Taraji P. Henson (“The Color Purple”), America Ferrera (“Barbie”), Rosamund Pike (“Saltburn”), and Claire Foy (“All of Us Strangers”), among others.

Films that were surprisingly snubbed overall include “May December,” “Past Lives,” “All of Us Strangers,” “Saltburn” and “Anatomy of a Fall.”

On the television side, “Succession” favorites Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin, Matthew Macfadyen, and Sarah Snook all landed individual nominations. All three principals from “The Bear,” Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach were recognized individually as well. A number of shows earned multiple noms including “Beef” stars Ali Wong and Steven Yeun, “The Last of Us” leads Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, “The Morning Show’s” Jennifer Aniston and Billy Cudrup (SAG loves this show), “Ted Lasso’s” Jason Sudeikis and Hannah Waddingham as well as “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’s” Rachel Brosnahan and Alex Borstein.

Next year’s SAG Awards, as well as the 2024 Emmy Award, will look quite different as “Succession,” “Ted Lasso” and “Maisel” have all said goodbye over the past 12 months.

The guild previously announced that Barbra Streisand will be the recipient of this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

The 2024 Screen Actors Guild Awards will be handed out on February 24 and streamed live on Netflix.
