Got a Tip?

Colin Trevorrow Rewriting & Directing Disney’s ‘Flight of the Navigator’ Remake

nullWhile the rumors pointed to involvement in "Star Wars 7," it looks like many folks misread the tea leaves for Colin Trevorrow. While an interview from this summer where he talked about tackling a grand "mythology" seemed to give currency that he was taking on George Lucas' franchise, in recent weeks Trevorrow has been trying to distance himself from the hotly buzzed new trilogy, before telling THR outright: "It’s not going to be me for Episode VII, and I can’t believe I’ve actually had to come out and say that." However, he is taking a Disney project that is certainly beloved by many of certain age.

Variety reports that Trevorrow and his "Safety Not Guaranteed" collaborator Derek Connolly will be writing a "Flight Of The Navigator" remake, with Trevorrow to direct. Another story with a time travel twist, the 1986 original centers on a twelve year old David who gets knocked unconscious, but when he wakes up moments later, finds himself several years in the future. Taken to the hospital for testing, he crosses paths with an alien being being held captive, who is responsible for his trip into the future. Together, the pair escape and try to find a way to bring David back to the correct time.

The movie was sort of a big deal at the time for its pioneering visual effects, and Connolly notes that though he isn't a big fan of the original, it's actually an asset. "'Flight of the Navigator' wasn't a seminal movie of my childhood but I remember liking it and the original meant a lot to Colin as a kid, so it's really his baby. It'll be good to have some balance so it's not two fanboys writing the movie," he told the trade.

The movie has been brewing for a while, with Brad Copeland ("Arrested Development") hired to pen a script way back in 2009. But certainly with Trevorrow and Connolly aboard, it has new life, and continues the former's relationship with Disney, as he sold them a secretive pitch earlier this year as well. So, are you childhood memories ruined or is Trevorrow the right guy for this gig? Let us know below.
