'Creature From The Black Lagoon': James Wan Eyed To Direct New Take On Horror Classic

James Wan just can’t get enough of people living in the water, huh? Just as he has stepped away from the “Aquaman” franchise, it appears the horror filmmaker is ready to take a stab at “Creature from the Black Lagoon.”

According to THR, James Wan has signed on to develop a new feature film take on “Creature from the Black Lagoon,” with an eye towards directing the film himself. The original ‘50s film tells the story of a group of scientists who go to the Amazon to study a creature they found who lives underwater. Obviously, things don’t go very well for the scientists. It’s unclear what Wan’s take on the film is going to be.

As mentioned, Wan’s most recent film was “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.” Prior to that, he directed the horror film, “Malignant.” He’s probably best known for his horror work, particularly with “The Conjuring,” “Saw,” and “Insidious.” He clearly wants to stay in that realm with the addition of ‘Creature’ to his schedule.

The new ‘Creature’ film fits with what Universal seems to want to do with the various Universal Monsters projects. The studio is less interested in making sure these films fit together in a cinematic universe, and is more concerned about making quality films that are new interpretations of the classics. In addition to ‘Creature,’ we’ve already seen “The Invisible Man” score well with critics and fans, and there are also new takes on “The Wolfman” and “Dracula” that have been discussed.

It’s still too early to know when we might see “Creature from the Black Lagoon” show up in cinemas yet again.
