‘Criminal’: Prime Video Gives Season Order To New Thriller Series Based On Acclaimed Comic Book

Prime Video has been steadily producing some of the most popular adaptations of popular IP over the past several years. Shows like “Jack Ryan,” “Reacher,” and “The Boys” have been solid hits for the streaming service and are all based on pre-existing IP. Now, it appears the streaming service would like to keep that streak going with “Criminal.”

According to THR, Prime Video has given a season order to the new crime thriller series, “Criminal.” Based on the acclaimed comic books of the same name, from writer Ed Brubaker and artist Sean Phillips, “Criminal” follows various crime stories that are all interlocking in surprising ways. The comic made a name for itself by having an almost anthological structure, changing characters and stories every several issues. It appears the new series might do the same thing. Interestingly, one of the story arcs of “Criminal” involved grown-up versions of classic “Archie” characters who have become middle-aged and sad, but they’re brought together after a murder.

Not only did Brubaker co-create the comic book series, but he is also on board as a writer, producer, and co-showrunner for the “Criminal” series. He’s sharing the showrunner duties alongside author Jordan Harper

“Sean and I have been building this world in our books for over a decade, and now to be able to bring it to life for Amazon is just incredible,” said Brubaker. “And to have Amazon support the project the way they have and show so much faith in my and Jordan’s vision for the show is even more incredible.”

Previous to this show, Brubaker wrote episodes of “Westworld” and the upcoming animated series, “Batman: Caped Crusader.” But if you’re a comic book fan, you know Brubaker as one of the best American comic book writers of the last few decades. Due to Marvel seeming to have a hard time giving credit to comic book creators in their films, you may not be aware that Brubaker co-created the Winter Soldier and wrote the story that was the basis for the second ‘Captain America’ film.

All this to say, people should start to get excited for “Criminal” when it eventually arrives on Prime Video in the future.
