Criterion's October Selections Are Disturbing & Terrifying Including 'Demon Pond,' 'Gummo' & More

In October, it looks like the Criterion Collection will have you taken care of if you’re looking for classic horror for Halloween. And if classic horror doesn’t tickle your fancy, there are plenty of other options as well.

On the horror side of things, the October Criterion selections include “Demon Pond,” a Japanese folk horror classic from director Masahiro Shinoda. The 1979 film now features a 4K digital restoration which was overseen by the filmmaker as well as actor Tamasaburo Bando. The October selections also include a double feature from producer Val LewtonI Walked with a Zombie” and “The Seventh Victim.” The Criterion release includes 4K digital restorations of both films, as well as commentary tracks for both.

But as mentioned, if horror isn’t your cup of tea, there are still options for you in October. Leading the way is none other than Harmony Korine’s disturbing film, “Gummo.” The Criterion release includes a new 4K digital restoration, supervised and approved by Korine. In addition, there is a new interview with the director. And finally, there is a film that is nearly a century old, “Pandora’s Box,” from director G. W. Pabst. The silent film features a new 2K digital restoration, as well as four separate scores for the film.
