‘The Crown’ Star Claire Foy Frontrunner For Lisbeth Salander In 'The Girl In The Spider’s Web'

The Crown” star Claire Foy is currently filming the second season of the acclaimed Netflix series, and now the rest of her career lays ahead. It was confirmed earlier this year that the actress would be recast for season three of the show, as she’ll be too young for the role of Queen Elizabeth II, as the series will continue to take a decades-long leap through history with each season. However, her performance in the series has turned the right heads, and she’s got some incredible options on her plate.

Foy is the frontrunner to play Lisbeth Salander in Sony’s ‘Dragon Tattoo’ reboot “The Girl In The Spider’s Web,” set to be directed by Fede Alvarez. Big time A-listers Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson — who David Fincher initially eyed for his film before settling on Rooney Mara — were initially tipped as contenders, but that proved to be not much more than rumor. Foy is a left-field choice, and a particularly great one because it will definitely give the actress a chance to show audiences a whole different side from her buttoned-down turn as the Queen of England.

However, nothing is a done deal, and another big project could stand in the way. Foy is also meeting with “La La Land” director Damien Chazelle for a role in his next film, the Neil Armstong pic “First Man,” starring Ryan Gosling. Both pictures are slated for October 2018 release dates — they’re just a week apart — so Foy would likely have to choose one over the other, but it should be noted, she hasn’t received a formal offer for either picture just yet (though, depending on which outlet you read, she may already be in early talks).

Thoughts? It’s hard to picture Foy as Salander, but perhaps that’s what makes it so exciting. “The Girl In The Spider’s Web” will open on October 19, 2018. [Variety/THR]
