With Rian Johnson crafting a new “Star Wars” trilogy, that won’t touch the Luke Skywalker story, does that mean the mainline saga is over? It’s a big question that probably won’t be answered for a while, but if Lucasfilm is counting on the future of that narrative to be carried by Daisy Ridley‘s Rey, they might have to write some bigger paychecks.
The actress, who has now broken into global recognition thanks to the franchise, says she’ll be ready to hang up the lightsaber after “Star Wars: Episode IX.”
“No,” she told Rolling Stone about extending her role beyond this current trio of “Star Wars” movies. “For me, I didn’t really know what I was signing on to. I hadn’t read the script, but from what I could tell, it was really nice people involved, so I was just like, ‘Awesome.’ Now I think I am even luckier than I knew then, to be part of something that feels so like coming home now.”
“No, no, no.,” Ridley emphasized again about possibly returning. “I am really, really excited to do the third thing and round it out, because ultimately, what I was signing on to was three films. So in my head, it’s three films. I think it will feel like the right time to round it out.”
Pressed one last time, about maybe — one day — returning, perhaps three decades after these films, just like Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, and Carrie Fisher did, upon calculating she’d be 55 years old, Ridley said, “Fuck. I can’t think that far ahead.”
For the rest of us, we just have to worry about getting to cinemas on December 15th.
