Got a Tip?

Damon Lindelof & ‘Ms. Marvel’ Director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy Attached To New ‘Star Wars’ Film

Back in 2019, it was announced by the folks in charge at Disney that the “Star Wars” franchise would take a break on the film side of things after the release of ‘Rise of Skywalker.’ But even then, you have to assume the executives didn’t imagine we’d be waiting at least until 2025 for a new film in the galaxy far, far away. And with the latest news about two new filmmakers being attached to a “Star Wars” project, we’re not even sure which film we might see in 2025.

According to Deadline, Lucasfilm has brought on Damon Lindelof to write a new “Star Wars” film. In addition to Lindelof, the studio is also in talks with director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy to helm the new feature. As you might expect, the details about what this film might actually look like is still unknown, but it’s seeming as if this new project could become the next “Star Wars” film that comes in 2025. And really, we should be saying “if” when it comes to whether or not a film will arrive in 2025 or get pushed again.

We’ve had quite a few release dates get announced for the next “Star Wars” film, with those dates getting pushed and pushed. We don’t even know which film might be the next in line, as the reports claim that at least 3 or 4 “Star Wars” features are being developed at the same time. Alas, the latest with Lindelof and Obaid-Chinoy is an exciting prospect, based on their pedigree alone.

Lindelof is no stranger to franchise films. He’s written/co-written films in the “Alien” (“Prometheus”) and “Star Trek” (“Star Trek Into Darkness”) franchises. He’s also tried to kickstart franchises with films such as “Cowboys vs. Aliens” and “Tomorrowland.” However, there are plenty of people who are concerned that his film work leaves a lot to be desired. That said, his most recent high-profile project, HBO’sWatchmen,” was critically acclaimed and won a ton of Emmys. So, we really don’t know which version of Lindelof we’ll potentially see.

Obaid-Chinoy is a bit of an unknown, as well. She’s an accomplished documentary and short filmmaker. Her most recent project is also her biggest to date, directing multiple episodes of Marvel Studios’ “Ms. Marvel.” Her work on that show proves that she has the chops to handle big franchise material.

But again, we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention how creators have come and go pretty frequently from the “Star Wars” developmental process, primarily on the film side of things. So, will we ever see this new project from Lindelof and Obaid-Chinoy? Who knows? We’ll just have to wait and see.
