Even though we saw the three major live-action Spider-Men team up in last year’s “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” there was just a feeling that “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” did it better. The latter film, which won the Best Animated Feature Oscar, is just the single best ‘Spider-Man’ film to ever exist and might be the best superhero film, period. (That’s something that can freely be debated on social media.) Regardless, to say that fans are excited about the upcoming ‘Spider-Verse’ sequel, “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Part 1” is a gross understatement. And now, with the latest addition to the voice cast, somehow our excitement grows even more.
According to Variety, Daniel Kaluuya is the latest actor to join the voice cast for “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Part 1.” As the new title suggests, ‘Across the Spider-Verse’ sees Miles Morales, aka Spider-Man, team up with Gwen Stacy one more time to venture across the multiverse to meet other Spidey variants as they take on a new threat. As for who Kaluuya is voicing, he’s none other than Hobart “Hobie” Brown, aka Spider-Punk. Yes, that does mean there’s a version of Spider-Man in the multiverse who is based on a punk rock fan. And yes, there are spikes and a mohawk involved.
Somehow, Kaluuya is joining a cast that is even more stacked than the first film with folks like Oscar Isaac, Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, Brian Tyree Henry, Luna Lauren Velez, Greta Lee, Issa Rae, Rachel Dratch, Joma Taccone, Shea Whigham, and Jason Schwartzman.
Originally slated to be just one film, ‘Across the Spider-Verse’ has been revealed to be a two-part epic. We’re just hoping the film is able to live up to the ridiculous buzz that surrounds it due to the award-winning original. As far as casting goes, the newest entry is already living up to the hype.
“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Part 1” debuts in theaters on June 2, 2023.
