Director Danny Boyle Exits 'Bond 25' Over "Creative Differences"

In “Didn’t see that coming!” news, today the folks behind the upcoming James Bond film, tentatively titled “Bond 25,” announced that director Danny Boyle has left the project.

Michael G. Wilson, Barbara Broccoli and Daniel Craig today announced that due to creative differences Danny Boyle has decided to no longer direct ‘Bond 25,'” said the official statement posted to Twitter.

That’s right, after all the “will he or won’t he?” with Boyle, which included a delay on the film to better suit his schedule and desire to write a new script, it appears that “Bond 25” is back at square one. The real question is what happens next?

Many fans like to think of the ‘Bond’ franchise as a series of films with premier filmmaking talent attached. Most notably, the recent two outings included acclaimed director Sam Mendes behind the camera. But keep in mind, before Mendes, a recent film in the series was directed by Martin Campbell, who is never routinely thought of as a filmmaker of the highest pedigree. No offense to those people who are fans of “Green Lantern.”

So, the only real options that seem to exist are either A) start fresh, bringing in a new filmmaker and probably a brand-new script. Or B) go back to the work that was done on a script before Boyle and writer John Hodge came on board. There are definite pros and cons to each.

If they start fresh, the ticking clock begins again, as it will almost certainly be delayed further, and a 2019 release is almost impossible. Does Craig stick around for that much longer? Do the producers decide to really start fresh and reboot the whole damn thing yet again?

The other option is to find a journeyman director (which they’ve done in the past, i.e. “Green Lantern’s” Martin Campbell) and go back to a previous script and hope to rush into production. The odds of this happening and making Daniel Craig happy are pretty slim. Remember, this is his last hurrah as the iconic character, and even with the mountain of cash that they’re paying the actor, he doesn’t want to turn in a turd for his finale.

Needless to say, the “creative differences” that Danny Boyle and the folks behind ‘Bond’ are experiencing are throwing the entire future of the franchise in question. Hopefully, we’ll get more news soon.
