'The Dark Knight,' 'Wall-E' & 'Juno' The Big Movie-Related Grammy Winners

The Grammy Awards— that mostly inessential and ineffectual music awards ceremony and show — were given out tonight and movie fans will want to take note of the three film-related categories.

Perhaps to right the wrong of the Academy Awards snub, Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard’s “The Dark Knight” score won Best Soundtrack Score. Peter Gabriel’s “Down To Earth” song from “Wall-E,” bested both Amy Adams, John C. Reilly, and John Mayer for the Best Song award and the twee mix of Moldy Peaches/Kimya Dawson songs from “Juno” took the Best Compilation Soundtrack prize. Here’s the winners and the nominees left out in the cold (poor Jonny Greenwood).

Peter Gabriel’s “Down To Earth” already has a great shot at Oscar, so don’t think the Grammys are a bellwether of anything other than coincidence. They’re slowly getting more relevant, but mostly, eh. We will say we’re glad that Robert Plant and Alison Krauss won some awards because that album is chock full of good songs as MOR as they might sound from the outside. Radiohead’s In Rainbows won Best Alternative Album. The full list of winners is here.
