David Ayer is no stranger to negative reviews, having weathered the storm of “Suicide Squad.” But I’d imagine he would’ve liked to have to delivered a critical homerun for “Bright,” Netflix‘s first bonafide blockbuster production. The streaming service is already banking on success (which on their terms is more data driven, than derived from opinion) with development on a sequel already underway, but the reviews still provide a hump they need to get over.
‘Bright’ Sequel In The Works At Netflix
Last night, the review embargo lifted on “Bright”and the knives were out. The film is currently standing at 27% on Rotten Tomatoes (just one percentage point above “Suicide Squad”), and our own critic called the humans ‘n orcs cop movie starring Will Smith and Joel Edgerton an “ill-conceived hodgepodge of incongruent ideas.” Indiewire was particularly harsh, calling it the absolute worst movies of year, but Ayer has once again bravely taken the bullet. From Twitter….
This is going on my fridge. Highest compliment is a strong reaction either way. This is a f*cking epic review. It’s a big fun movie. You can sure string words together Mr. Erlich. I’d love to read any script you’ve written.

I really appreciate that. Every movie is a labor of love for me. I’ve never chased the audience, and I know my work can be polarizing. I’ve lived a crazy love and I guess my movies reflect that. https://t.co/YZBp2DwKlO

David Ayer has always stood proudly beside his movies, even if he has regrets about “Suicide Squad,” and has a slight delusion that its on the way to cult status. As always, however, it’ll be up to audiences, and Netflix will surely be crunching the numbers this weekend, and watching how many thumbs up or down “Bright” gets as the movie slides into everyone’s holiday binge watching schedule.
Click play on “Bright” starting Friday.
