In the weird, topsy-turvy year that is 2020, one of the least surprising reveals in the world of film and TV is the fact that David Cronenberg made a surprise appearance in CBS All Access’ “Star Trek: Discovery.” In fact, he’s actually coming back for Season 4, reprising his role. In any other year, that might be something that catches you off guard and makes you wonder what the hell is going on with Cronenberg these days? But in 2020, that just barely raises an eyebrow. That said, if you’re curious what the filmmaker has on tap, Variety has some news.

According to an interview with Variety, Cronenberg reveals that he has no less than three projects that he’s trying to get off the ground. Two of the projects are films he has written, and another is a TV series that he has penned. Details about any of them are being kept strictly under wraps. However, as mentioned, he is going to do some more acting, appearing in next season’s ‘Discovery.’ But one thing he knows for sure, as far as directing goes, he won’t lend his talents to the ‘Star Trek’ series. Or any blockbuster series, for that matter.
“It’s a very different kind of directing,” Cronenberg said about possibly stepping behind the camera on ‘Discovery.’ “It’s almost like another job entirely, you know, and that’s another thing that I was very interested to see. It’s more technical. Now I can’t say this for certain about ‘Discovery’ because I really don’t know, but I doubt that the directors are around for post-production, for all that CG, and for when you have to do additional recording.”
He continued, “I did do some [ADR on my episode], and there was no director involved. It was just the sound people who were putting the soundtrack together. These are all things that when you’re directing a movie, you are totally involved in. And you are involved in choosing the cameraman, you are involved in casting, and so on. When you come to a series like ‘Star Trek,’ a lot of that stuff has already been determined by the producers and the showrunner. So it’s quite a different kind of directing. If I do direct again, it wouldn’t be to direct an episode of a series.”

At this point, considering it’s been more than six years since “Maps to the Stars” hit theaters, Cronenberg fans would like to see anything directed by him, even if it is a one-off episode of a multi-season franchise show on a fringe streaming service. But, it appears that if he directs something, it’s going to be one of those other projects he has in development. So, once again, we enter a new year hoping there is more Cronenberg on the horizon.
