Indie auteur, David Gordon Green has added project #5,321 to his ongoing and growing list of films he is supposed to direct. This one, titled, “Freaks of the Heartland,” is supposed to be a horror thriller he’s making for Overture Films.
The story is based off a graphic novel by Steve Niles, who will executive produce. Niles wrote the graphic novel, “30 Days Of Night.”
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the comic centers on the “horrible secret of a rural Middle American town involves Trevor Owen’s attempts to protect his ‘monster’ of a 6-year-old younger brother and Gristlewood Valley’s other ‘freaks’ from their parents’ worst instincts.” Basically, it’s kind of a horror “Deliverance” with inbred kids written in a ‘Beverly Hillbillies’ patois.
Green’s always been a fan of “Deliverance,” rustic settings and Farmland, Terrence Malick-like visuals, so this might not be far off the look of his 2004 film, “Undertow,” which mined similar territory with mixed results (maybe this is the do-over to get it right).
Overture is the same company that recently acquired the rights to the remake of the Swedish vampire film, “Let The Right One In,’ which will be directed by “Cloverfield” filmmaker Matt Reeves, who will also write it.
Green has 10,000 other projects on his plate, but we know by history, he signs on for a lot of projects, and only half of them ever come to fruition (though by no fault of his own). So is Green doing horror twice? He had signed on for a remake of “Suspiria.” Maybe that’s not happening? Either that or he wrote his script, is awaiting the money people and had moved on like usual.
