David Lynch Clarifies Health Status & Says He's Not Retiring

Yesterday, film fans around the world were sad to learn that health concerns were preventing the legendary filmmaker David Lynch from pursuing a new film or TV project. Effectively, if you believed what he was saying, he was forced into retirement. Well, shortly after that, Lynch took to social media to deny he was actually retiring.

In a post on Twitter, David Lynch shared a statement that confirmed that his health issues are very real—a consequence to his cigarette smoking—but he isn’t retiring. In fact, he’s in great health, for the most part.

“Yes, I have emphysema from my many years of smoking,” wrote Lynch. “I have to say that I enjoyed smoking very much, and I do love tobacco – the smell of it, lighting cigarettes on fire, smoking them – but there is a price to pay for this enjoyment, and the price for me is emphysema. I have now quit smoking for over two years. Recently I had many tests and the good news is that I am in excellent shape except for emphysema. I am filled with happiness, and I will never retire.”

When we initially wrote about this news about David Lynch retiring, we pointed out that the filmmaker hasn’t really been active making films or TV for the past several years. However, he did have a project at Netflix, titled “Unrecorded Night,” that was apparently all ready to go, but it was canceled when the pandemic hit a few years back. So, as of now, it would appear that Lynch doesn’t have any active projects in development, outside of his music that he is still making.

But this is good news on two fronts. First, and foremost, David Lynch is in pretty good health and doing well. And second, we may just see a new TV or film project from the filmmaker at some point in the future. Fingers crossed.
