Johnny Depp is making another attempt to resurrect his Hollywood career with a new film called “Day Drinker.” The pic at Lionsgate hails from director Marc Webb (“500 Days of Summer”) coming off his box office downer at Disney, “Snow White,” and Variety has shared a first look image of Depp in character.
“Day Drinker” also features a reunion with Depp’s “Blow” and “Pirates of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” co-star Penélope Cruz, along with Madelyn Cline, Manu Ríos, Arón Piper, Juan Diego Botto, and Anika Boyle.
As mentioned by the outlet, the logline for the film, “‘Day Drinker’ tells the story of a private-yacht bartender (Cline) who encounters a mysterious, onboard guest (Depp). They soon find themselves entangled with a criminal figure (Cruz) and connected in ways no one saw coming.”
Filming is underway in Spain with Thunder Road’s Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee producing. The duo is likely best known for their key involvement with the “John Wick” franchise, which has been a massive hit for Lionsgate, as they recently announced a prequel anime film, Donnie Yen would direct the “Caine” spinoff, and “John Wick 5” at CinemaCon last month.
The title “Day Drinker” is a little on-the-nose given the actor’s well-documented issues with substance abuse and while on-camera throwing wine bottles at ex-wife Amber Heard, leading to defamation civil lawsuits (not criminal trials) in the U.K. and U.S. stemming from allegations of domestic abuse by Heard. Tabloids and entertainment media from both sides of the pond pushed a lot of sensationalized coverage that would lead to a wacky narrative of a “redemption story” or “vindication” for Depp, which it was anything but as Warner Bros. and Disney would eventually sever their working relationship on “Fantastic Beasts” and “Pirates” franchises.
Depp’s hiccups didn’t end with Heard; in the wake of that news, the actor got abusive and violent with a crew member on the set of the crime flick “City of Lies.” In 2017, he was alleged to have gotten physical with a crew member after an exchange with Depp that angered him to the point of putting hands on location manager Gregg “Rocky” Brooks, and the two settled that situation back in 2022.
Hopefully, in the end, the actor can keep his hands to himself and be grateful anyone is willing to hire or insure him. Ultimately, audiences will likely determine if Depp gets more high-profile Hollywood work in the future beyond “Day Drinker.”
