Marvel Re-Slates 'Deadpool 3' For July 26, 2024, Release, Pushing 'Captain America: Brave New World' To Valentine's Day 2025

With the SAG strike finally over, it’s time for studios to put their release schedules for upcoming movies back together. But in the case of Disney and Marvel Studios, it means more maneuvering in a year full of release date shuffles. Deadline reports that Shawn Levy‘s “Deadpool 3” is back on the 2024 calendar after Marvel lifted it from its May 3, 2024 release date three weeks ago. Good news, but here’s the catch: it takes the July 26, 2024 release date of “Captain America: Brave New World,” which now heads to a February 14, 2025 release date.

MCU fans already know that the Valentine’s Day 2015 release date was tentative for “Blade.” So where does that movie head? The long-gestating project now heads to November 7, 2025. On top of that, “Thunderbolts” now moves to 2025, too, going from a December 20, 2024 release to July 25, 2025. And in non-Marvel moves, Barry Jenkins‘ “Mufasa: The Lion King” moves from July 5, 2024 to December 20, 2024. Plus, Disney takes two untitled movies off their schedule entirely: one on July 25, 2025, and another on November 7, 2025.

So let’s break down all these moves, starting with Marvel’s 2024 theatrical release schedule. In the aftermath of the guild strikes, only one MCU title hits theaters next year, “Deadpool 3.” And as of right now, only one Marvel series premieres on Disney+ next year, too: “Echo,” on January 10, 2024. Is it not apparent that Disney CEO Bob Iger is taking the “less is more” approach to Marvel titles very seriously now? Obviously, “Agatha: Darkhold Diaries” and “Ironheart” may yet get 2024 premiere dates, but what a dramatic shift from the sheer glut of Marvel releases just two years ago.

Marvel Studio’s latest calendar moves come on the heels of Sony moving “Venom 3” from July 14, 2024 to November 8 next year. And expect other studios to move things around in the coming weeks as actors return to work and shooting restarts on various projects halted by the SAG strike. But the big news here is only one Marvel title hitting multiplexes in 2024. Maybe there’s more to these changes than just the guild strikes? As “The Marvels” looks to have the worst theatrical opening for an MCU title in seven years, it’s clear that superhero movie fatigue may indeed be a real thing. And if that’s the case, Marvel Studios may have even more dramatic shifts they’re preparing for in the future.
