'Deadpool & Wolverine' Producer Says Marvel Planted Fake Leaks To Protect Film's Secrets

It’s no surprise to hear Marvel Studios goes to great lengths to protect the secrets in its films. The actors and producers involved always joke about just how serious the studio is about talking about almost anything regarding the projects they work on. And for “Deadpool & Wolverine,” one of Marvel’s producers explained how the studio may have used fans against themselves to protect secrets.

In a new interview with GamesRadar+, Marvel Studios executive producer Wendy Jacobson talked about the secrets in “Deadpool & Wolverine.” Specifically, she talked about how Marvel used fans’ own fervor to help hide specific cameos in the film. She teased “there may or may not have been some subterfuge and misdirections on the internet or in-person in order to protect the secrecy.”

She added, “I can neither confirm nor deny any cameos in this film but I will say, in terms of characters that may or may not appear, it was always important to us that nothing in this movie feels like a gimmick. Anyone showing up has a crucial story purpose or a beginning, middle, and end as a character arc. It was definitely a collaborative process of seeing who fit in and who didn’t.”

There were seemingly more leaks than usual on “Deadpool & Wolverine” than with other MCU projects because of how the film was made. There were real sets used and so set leaks were a thing. We had pictures of Deadpool, Wolverine, and various other folks before they were officially announced. That combined with regular old scooping by internet personalities, and there seemed to be quite a few secrets revealed. But now, with what Jacobson is saying, some of those “leaks” were in fact bad information.

As annoying as it might be to read an interview with someone from Marvel Studios as they dance around questions and give non-answers, as a fan, it’s pretty wonderful. It’s always better to see the secrets reveal themselves on the big screen than with some low resolution set photos or scoopers.

You can find out all the secrets of “Deadpool & Wolverine” yourself when the film hits theaters on July 26.
