Denzel Washington is set to turn 70 years old by the end of this year. That means, according to the actor, he’s only interested in working with some of the biggest names in filmmaking while he still has the chance.
Speaking in a new interview with Classic FM, Denzel Washington talked about the filmmakers he is excited to work with before he retires. More specifically, he is showing what the level of filmmaker is that he wants to work with. Let’s just say he’s way past working on a no-budget indie.
“I’m only interested in working with the best,” said Washington. “So, I got Ryan Coogler I’ve been talking with. Talked with him last night. Had a two-hour conversation with Steve McQueen. Had a great conversation—but I’m not making a film with him yet—with Paul Thomas Anderson. That’s the level I’m talking about… People that inspire me.”
We’ve already heard Washington talk about wanting to work with Ryan Coogler on “Black Panther 3” and Steve McQueen on an unknown film. Adding to the growing list is Paul Thomas Anderson, who is definitely on the level of those previous two filmmakers. We also know that Washington isn’t working on PTA’s newest, untitled film that he has been working on for the better part of a year. So, we’re thinking this will happen sometime in the future.
As a longtime film fan, it’s a little sad to know Washington is planning his exit from the industry. Of course, it’s not like it’s happening tomorrow. Clearly, Washington has some big projects he wants to work on in the future. But the reality is, Washington isn’t going to work forever.
