Karyn Kusama is a director that everyone here at The Playlist absolutely adores. From her incredible debut with “Girl Fight” back in 2000 to her grossly underrated “The Invitation,” we just love everything she puts her unique twist on. Yes, even “Jennifer’s Body,’ which is a great cult classic. And with her latest film, “Destroyer,” it appears she’s ready to once and for all put her name on the list of some of the greatest filmmakers working today.

But for “Destroyer,” it’s not just the beautiful work of Kusama’s direction or Nicole Kidman’s incredible performance in the lead that has gotten us excited. The upcoming film also features a truly memorable score, composed by Theodore Shapiro. And while “Destroyer” won’t be released until Christmas, fans of Kusama, and great music in general, can hear Shapiro’s score when Lakeshore Records releases it on November 16.
And in honor of the score’s impending release, we are lucky enough to exclusively share one of the most memorable tracks from the film. The track, titled “Chaconne,” shows just how much thought went into the music for “Destroyer.” Shapiro has said that he wanted to create a sound “that is obsessive, animal, fierce, but also tinged with a layer of pain and regret.” And you can hear that all throughout this exclusive track.

The composer talked more about his inspiration for the music in the film, “The music for ‘Destroyer’ comes first and foremost out of the character of Detective Erin Bell, played by the wonderful actor Nicole Kidman. Guided by Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi’s superb script, and through extensive conversations with Karyn Kusama, we as a team began to wrestle with how to give a musical language to this profoundly complicated female protagonist.”
As mentioned, Lakeshore Records is releasing the score for “Destroyer” on November 16, but you can pre-order it now. The film will hit theaters on December 25.
