‘Destroyer’ Trailer: Nicole Kidman’s Detective Faces Demons & A Traumatic Past

Nicole Kidman has been on a roll lately with her choice of projects. The Oscar winner (“The Hours“) was nominated for a fourth time in 2017 for her work in “Lion.” Most recently, she won a Golden Globe and a Primetime Emmy award for her role as Celeste Wright on the hit HBO show “Big Little Lies.” Perhaps more impressive is the fact that she appears to be at the most productive stage in her acting career; with a total of eight projects coming out over the next two years, including the upcoming “Destroyer,” which debuted earlier this fall at the Telluride Film Festival and then screened immediately after at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), one has to wonder how the Australian thespian manages it all on top of raising a family. Co-written by longtime screenwriting collaborators Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi (“The Invitation,” “Crazy/Beautiful“) and directed by their two-time collaborator Karyn Kusama (“The Invitation,” “Æon Flux,” “Jennifer’s Body“), it’s one of the more anticipated films premiering at TIFF.

“Phil and Matt have written one of the most compelling screenplays I’ve ever read.” Producer Fred Berger (“La La Land“) told Variety. “Nicole is at the top of her game — doing tremendously exciting work — and Karyn is one of the most assured voices working today. It’s a powerful combination, sure to produce an iconic character, and I feel lucky to be in their company.”

Aside from season two of “Big Little Lies,” Kidman will be starring in “Aquaman,” “Boy Erased,” Joel Edgerton‘s followup to his critically acclaimed “The Gift,” John Crowley‘s (“Brooklyn“) “The Goldfinch,” the TV series “The Expatriates,” she will play former Fox News anchor Gretchen Carlson in Jay Roach‘s (“Game Change“) “Fair and Balanced,” about the Roger Ailes sexual misconduct scandal, and “She Came to Me.” Below is the official premise for “Destroyer:”

Destroyer follows the moral and existential odyssey of LAPD detective Erin Bell who, as a young cop, was placed undercover with a gang in the California desert with tragic results. When the leader of that gang re-emerges many years later, she must work her way back through the remaining members and into her own history with them to finally reckon with the demons that destroyed her past.

“Destroyer” boasts an envious supporting cast, including Sebastian Stan, Toby Kebbell, Tatiana Maslany, Bradley Whitford, Jade Pettyjohn, and Scoot McNairy.

David Diliberto (“No Country for Old Men“) and Nathan Kelly (“Short Term 12“) join Berger, Hay, and Manfredi as producers. “Destroyer” is one of the 12 feature films nominated for a Platform Prize at TIFF, an annual award acknowledging talented directors. Annapurna is in charge of the U.S. release of “Destroyer,” but no official release date has been given at this time.
