‘The Kid Who Would Be King’ Trailer: Joe Cornish Brings Old-School Magic And The Modern World Together

At first glance, this movie might just swoop right over your head…perhaps something you might find in the clearance section of your local retailer. But just when you think, “oh, another cheesy family kid movie,” think and look again especially when it comes to the person behind the movie.

The Kid Who Would Be King” is directed and written by Joe Cornish. It’s been seven years since Cornish directed the wildly fun and witty, “Attack the Block” starring a young John Boyega. Having overseen a teen gang defend their block from an alien invasion, Cornish is now delving more into the fantasy adventure genre with a sword, wizard, an enchantress. It’s basically old-school magic meets the modern world.

Cornish also helped pen the wonderfully chill and refreshing Marvel film, “Ant-Man,” so we’re hoping that this movie will carry equally fresh characters and a narrative that won’t simply appeal to younger audiences. The film stars Louise Serkis (son of Andy Serkis) front and center as Alex who thinks he’s a nobody until he encounters the mythical Sword in the Stone, Excalibur. Serkis has starred alongside some big actors in “Alice Through the Looking Glass” and “Taboo” and he’s finally getting his lead role with this project.

Starring alongside Serkis is a talented cast with Patrick Stewart (“X-Men,” “Star Trek”) as the wizard Merlin and Rebecca Ferguson (“The Greatest Showman,” “The Girl on the Train”) as the enchantress, Morgana.

Here is the official synopsis and trailer:

Alex thinks he’s just another nobody, until he stumbles upon the mythical Sword in the Stone, Excalibur. Now, he must unite his friends and enemies into a band of knights and, together with the legendary wizard Merlin, take on the wicked enchantress Morgana. With the future at stake, Alex must become the great leader he never dreamed he could be.

‘The Kid’ is set to release January 25, 2019, but March seems to be the word.
