Yesterday, Diddy tweeted some “big news” – the actor-mogul-rapper would now be a series regular on “Downton Abbey.” That announcement, combined with a few more Downton-related tweets, a twitter background bearing the “Downton Abbey” logo and Highclere House as Diddy’s cover photo, left the Twitter-verse a bit befuddled. We knew that earlier this month PBS had announced that the upcoming season of the massive hit series would feature ‘Downton’’s first black character (played by English actor Gary Carr, not Diddy). But for how much we loved Diddy in “Get Him To The Greek” and all of the rave reviews for his turns on Broadway and television in “A Raisin in the Sun,” we felt something was up, especially after a PBS spokesman flat out denied it.
Midnight last night, our slight suspicions were confirmed when Funny or Die released their “Downton Diddy” video. Rather than making a ‘Downton’ debut, turns out Diddy had been at ‘Downtown’ *ahem* ‘Downton’ the entire time, hob-knobbing with the Earl of Grantham (Hugh Bonneville) and the Dowager (Maggie Smith) as Lord Wolcott, “the new owner of Downtown Abbey.” One of the funnier and more buzz-worthy parody videos to come out from Funny or Die in a while, Diddy inserts himself into some ‘Downton’ scenes and makes himself at home in Edwardian England. While in there, he has some pretty funny jokes, from referencing his annual “White Party” to being featured on the “Downtown Abbey” DVD cover, but only on the Lord Wolcott edition, to… well, we wouldn’t want to spoil it.
