Disney's Recent Fox Announcement May Have Killed Projects Like Ben Affleck's McDonald's Scandal Film, Animated 'Flash Gordon' & That 'Die Hard' Prequel

During a recent earnings call, Disney CEO Bob Iger lamented about the recent performance of the studio’s newest purchase, Fox. After the terrible box office performance of “Dark Phoenix,” as well as other recent Fox releases, the subsidiary ended up losing $170 million in the latest quarter, leading Disney to re-evaluate the future of the label.

What that means is that moving forward, Disney isn’t going to allow Fox to just create the same number of films that it usually does, leaving many of the projects that were seemingly in development now suddenly without the support of the studio. And someone over on Reddit decided to compile a list of the almost-300 films that are currently in some sort of development under the Fox brand and highlight which interesting films are likely going to find themselves on the chopping block.

Of the films that have been announced as in development that might not see the light of day include Taika Waititi’sFlash Gordon,” the long-in-development “Die Hard” prequel titled “McClane,” Ben Affleck’s McDonald’s Monopoly Scandal film, and many more. For a more comprehensive list, definitely check out the Reddit post.

Of course, just because it appears that Disney is putting the kibosh on the majority of Fox projects, the label will still release “Ford v. Ferrari,” “Judy,” “Terminator: Dark Fate,” and James Gray’sAd Astra” this year, as they were well into post-production when the deal was finalized earlier this year. It just sounds like Disney isn’t going to finance the bulk of what was on the development slate in the years to come.

That being said, of the Fox films in development, here are some of the ones that seem to be guaranteed (just naming several of the films, and definitely not a complete list):

All of the ‘Avatar’ sequels – There’s no way Disney isn’t producing these films, as the first was the biggest film of all time for almost a decade.

Bob’s Burgers: The Movie” – Film just got an official release date.

Death on the Nile” – Kenneth Branagh’s sequel to his Agatha Christie adaptation “Murder on the Orient Express.”

Free Guy” – Ryan Reynolds action/video game film. This was announced as moving forward when the Disney/Fox deal was finalized.

Upcoming ‘Kingsman’ Films – “The King’s Man” has a trailer, and “Kingsman 3” has a release date and a director, as well. These are definitely coming.

New Mutants” – Production is done. But the film has been delayed for years, at this point, leading us to wonder if this one might not just be quietly killed off or dumped on Hulu, despite recently being given a 2020 release date.

Planet of the Apes” Sequel – Just announced sequel that will be a continuation of the recent sci-fi/action trilogy.

West Side Story” – Production is currently underway on Steven Spielberg’s upcoming musical.

Woman in the Window” – Though delayed, the Amy Adams film is already in post-production, with reshoots pending.
