Jared Leto Still Optimistic About Disney's 'Tron 3' Coming Together

Development on a third “Tron” movie goes back to 2015 when there were reports that director Joseph Kosinski (“Top Gun: Maverick”), alongside leads Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde, was returning for “Tron 3” only for that incarnation to get scrapped by Disney. A second version has sprouted since, with Oscar-winner Jared Leto and “Lion” director Gareth Davis attached for the untitled pic and screenwriter Jesse Wigutow tasked with penning the script.

While doing press for his “Spider-Man” spinoff movie “Morbius,” Leto spoke to Screen Rant about the Disney sequel’s progress and indicated that work is still ongoing and that the studio could announce something in the future.

“I’m a super fan of ‘Tron,’ and we are working hard on Tron with our incredible partners at Disney,” Leto said of the status of the new installment. “Just an amazing group of creative people. We’re getting closer. We’re getting closer and closer, and who knows? Something may be [coming] sooner than later.”

One key element from “Tron: Legacy” won’t return as Daft Punk, the composers of the last film, have split up, and it seems unlikely they’d regroup just for Disney. While the visuals, minus a creepy CGI version of Jeff Bridges, and music were top-notch, the film failed to do as gangbusters as the studios hoped for, earning $400 million on a budget of $170 million. This likely explains why Disney hasn’t exactly been in a rush to make another movie.

It’s currently unknown if “Tron 3” will have any returning cast members or has any direct story beats carrying over.

Interestingly enough, Cillian Murphy, who is leading Christopher Nolan’s stacked WWII drama “Oppenheimer,” was teased for a future villain playing Edward Dillinger Jr. in the real world. He’s the son of David Warner’s Ed Dillinger, the tech company baddie from the original 1982 film. Perhaps, Dillinger is a character worth bringing back unless that is the role going to Leto.

“Morbius” opens in theaters on April 1, and no, this won’t be an April Fool’s joke. As for “Tron 3, “well, stay tuned for more news, and hope that Leto is actually teasing something concrete.
