The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the 10 finalists for the VFX Oscar that will participate in the annual “bake off” to determine the 2017 nominees.

On Dec. 2 AMPAS announced 20 films that were officially in the running. Now the field has been cut in half. Missing from the shorter list are notable contenders “Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice,” “Deadpool” “Alice Through The Looking Glass,” “Independence Day: Resurgence,” “Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children,” “Star Trek Beyond,” “Suicide Squad,” “Sully,” “X-Men: Apocalypse” and “Warcraft.” The latter is particularly surprising as many believed it was a lock for a nomination overall.

Here are the 10 films that will participate in the “back off” presentation for the Visual Effects branch on Jan. 7. Each film will have the opportunity to show 10-minute excerpts to the voting committee.
“Arrival”
“The BFG”
“Captain America: Civil War”
“Deepwater Horizon”
“Doctor Strange”
“Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”
“The Jungle Book”
“Kubo and the Two Strings”
“Passengers”
“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”
It’s worth noting that if “Kubo” is still in the running to be the first picture to be nominated for both a VFX Oscar and a Best Animated Feature Oscar.
The nominees for the 89th Oscars will be announced on Tuesday, Jan. 24. The 89th Academy Awards will be handed out on Sunday, Feb. 26.
