Donald Glover Says ‘Atlanta’ Almost Ended With Season 2, & Says “Death Is Natural” As Series Ends In 2022

The upcoming third season of FX’s popular “Atlanta” series, due March 2022, was written in early 2019, but the show almost came to a close at the end of season two, creator/star/writer/exec Donald Glover recently revealed at the FX Winter Television Critics Association (TCA) tour (via Variety). Instead, they soldiered on and wrote and shot seasons three and four back to back—though significantly delayed because of COVID.

As recently revealed by FX, “Atlanta” is ending with season four, season three coming out in March, and then season four hitting in the fall.

“Death is natural,” Glover told reporters at TCA about the series coming to an end. “I feel like when the conditions are right for something, they happen, and when the conditions aren’t right, they don’t happen. I don’t feel any longevity. Because then things start to get weird. The story was always supposed to be what it was. And the story, it really was us. Everybody in that writers’ room, everybody on set. It really was what we were going through and what we talked about. I think it ends perfectly.”

Glover denied that “Atlanta” was ending because of his development deal with Amazon for upcoming projects like a series reboot of “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” calling that deal “unrelated.” However, the creator said he’s still open to the idea of returning to the project in the future if it feels right, “If there’s a reason to do it, of course. Like a Christmas special. It always depends. I like keeping my options open.”

Moving past “Atlanta” allows Glover to continue to juggle his music career alongside fresh film and television projects, there is also an expectation he’ll participate in a Disney+ series coming from Justin Simien (“Dear White People”) focusing on the “Star Wars” space pirate/gambler, Lando Calrissian. Although, there hasn’t really been an update on the status of “Lando” since Lucasfilm announced it back in late 2020.
