'Dune,' 'West Side Story' Ring In Oscars' 2022 Sound Category Shortlist

Do you hear that noise? That’s the sigh of relief across Hollywood for the engineers, mixers, and artists behind the Sound Oscar contenders for 2022. This year’s shortlist included two musicals (“West Side Story,” “tick, tick…BOOM!”), two prestige dramas (“Belfast,” “The Power of the Dog”) and just one super-powered blockbuster (“Spider-Man: No Way Home”).

Surprising snubs in this always competitive category included “In The Heights,” “Respect,” “The French Dispatch,” “Nightmare Alley,” “Don’t Look Up,” “The Green Knight, “Shang-Chi and the Legend of 10 Rings” and “Godzilla vs. Kong,” among others.

This will be the second year of an overall Sound Academy Award. Previously, separate Sound Mixing and Sound Editing Oscars had been handed out for decades.

The complete list of films still in contention for the 2022 Sound Oscar are:

“Last Night in Soho”
“The Matrix Resurrections”
“No Time to Die”
“The Power of the Dog”
“A Quiet Place Part II”
“Spider-Man: No Way Home”
