'Eighth Grade' Star Elsie Fisher Received Hate On Twitter After 'Bohemian Rhapsody' Golden Globes Celebration

Social media is an unforgiving space. While it can be used for some serious good, it appears that many use it to just be angry…all the time. And that’s the cold hard truth that was presented to Golden Globe nominee (and 15-year-old) Elsie Fisher on Twitter last night.

After the Best Drama win for “Bohemian Rhapsody,” which was preceded by Rami Malek’s Best Actor trophy, Fisher excitedly tweeted (as teens are known to do), “IM SO HAPPY RAMI MALEK AND BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY WON GOLDEN GLOBES IM THRILLED TONIGHT IS THE BEST NIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

However, much to her surprise, Twitter decided to drag the young actress across the coals for her support of the Freddy Mercury biopic. Now, obviously, some of it was about how the film shouldn’t have won based on its merit (or lack thereof), but much of the vitriol that was spewed at Fisher came from the fact that it sounded as if she was supporting a film that was directed by Bryan Singer, who is not only an alleged problematic director behind-the-scenes but also someone alleged to have been involved in numerous sexual assaults.

After receiving so much anger on Twitter, it was clear that Fisher had no clue about the drama surrounding the film, as she replied, “Why is everyone being so mean about this? I’m genuinely sorry if I did something wrong.”

It would appear that shortly after that tweet, the young actress was given the appropriate information about the Singer/’Rhapsody’ drama and the director’s troubled past. Fisher then went on Twitter one more time to further explain her comments and hopefully put to bed any hate she was receiving.

“My thoughts on this- please educate me in the future if I do something problematic. I want to better myself and grow! I was also vaguely aware the director of said film was bad but had no other information as to why he was considered such or what he had done. I know now,” Fisher tweeted.

She continued, “I’ll continue to be proud of Rami and the supporting cast because they are incredible, but otherwise I will hold back. Understand this though; there are many problematic people in Hollywood, and as someone who is busy frequently I don’t always have time to keep up. So tell me.”

It’s a tough world out there, Twitter folk. Be safe and try to be kind.
