'Elvis' Trailer: Austin Butler & Tom Hanks Star In Baz Luhrmann's New Drama About The King Of Rock & Roll

There have been a number of actors who have attempted to portray Elvis Presley in films and TV shows over the years. Folks like Kurt Russell, Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, Bruce Campbell, and Michael Shannon are just several big actors who have given it their best shot. And joining their ranks is Austin Butler in the upcoming film, “Elvis.”

As seen in the trailer for “Elvis,” Butler plays Elvis Presley, as we’re given a peek into his life and career, from his time in the military to his domination of the pop and rock genres. However, the story of “Elvis” isn’t just about the King of Rock and Roll. The film also sheds light on his relationship with his manager, Colonel Tom Parker (played by Tom Hanks).

As you might expect, Butler had a lot of competition in his journey to land the lead role in “Elvis.” Reports claim that actors such as Ansel Elgort, Miles Teller, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Harry Styles were all in the running at some point to portray the legendary musician. Butler’s biggest role to date is probably his appearance in “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” Clearly, “Elvis” could be the role that really brings him into A-list territory.

Joining Hanks and Butler in the cast are Olivia DeJonge, Yola Quartey, Luke Bracey, Dacre Montgomery, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Kelvin Harrison Jr., and David Wenham. The film is directed by Baz Luhrmann, who co-wrote the film alongside Craig Pearce, Sam Bromell, and Jeremy Doner.

Interestingly, “Elvis” marks the first film from Luhrmann in nearly a decade, since 2013’s “The Great Gatsby.” Previously, he also directed features such as “Moulin Rouge” and “Strictly Ballroom.”

“Elvis” is expected to arrive in theaters on June 24. You can watch the trailer below.
