Now Ennio Morricone Reportedly Denies Even Meeting With Journalist About Quentin Tarantino Interview

By now, you’ve no doubt heard about the drama between legendary film composer Ennio Morricone, filmmaker Quentin Tarantino, and Playboy Germany. The situation began when Playboy Germany released an interview with Morricone, where the composer called Tarantino a “cretin” and continued to criticize the filmmaker in a similar fashion to what he’s done in the past. However, these comments were later refuted by Morricone, who released a statement denying making the disparaging remarks. But now, not willing to let it rest, Morricone is back with his most emphatic denial yet.

In a new interview with Italian media outlet Repubblica, Morricone again comments on the Playboy Germany article, but not only denies making the comments — he denies ever doing the interview in question.

The below is courtesy of Google Translate, which is not a perfectly reliable source, but even with the broken English translation, the sentiment is clear. “I will have sent to my lawyers to report the magazine and the journalist whose name and face I never met,” said Morricone. “I am outside of myself, I do not understand how certain things can happen in journalism.”

So, in contrast to his earlier denial, Morricone not only says that he didn’t make the comments about Tarantino, the composer says he has never met the journalist that supposedly interviewed him. His officially released statement from earlier said, in part, “I have never expressed any negative statements about the Academy, Quentin, or his films — and certainly, do not consider his films garbage. I have given a mandate to my lawyer in Italy to take civil and penal action.”

Denying making comments, and denying ever meeting the journalist are two completely different things. The first statement made it seem like the interview happened but the comments were fabricated, which in and of itself is terrible, if true. However, now Morricone is accusing Playboy Germany of not only fabricating the comments, but fabricating the entire interview, going so far as to say he never met the journalist.

At this point, it’s difficult to imagine the composer would be this emphatic with his denials if there wasn’t some truth to what he’s saying. However, it’s also pretty unbelievable to imagine an outlet with such a high profile, such as Playboy Germany, just completely making up an interview. It appears this drama will continue.
