Got a Tip?

Evan Goldberg: ‘Green Hornet’ Sequel Already Mapped Out; Sony Said “Never” To Gondry At First

Green Hornet” hits theaters this weekend, Friday January 14, so we thought we’d re-run some great interviews we conducted with writer Evan Goldberg (“Superbad,” “Pineapple Express“) last year.

While producer Neil Moritz played coy about a “Green Hornet” sequel when he talked to the Playlist last year saying, “Maybe, we’ll see [how it does],” others on the creative team were not as evasive.

An interview with director Michel Gondry gave us a tiny bit more info, but admittedly it wasn’t much. “Yeah, we have some ideas,” he said noting that it’s probably all about the box-office. “We’ve come up with an idea, but who knows.”

But as usual, ‘Green Hornet’ screenwriter Evan Goldberg (“Superbad,” “Pineapple Express“) — who was candid enough to tell us all kinds of things, including why they parted ways with Stephen Chow, news on
Sausage Party” a new film with Seth Rogen and Jonah Hill, and details on the hockey comedyGoon” starring Jay Baruchel and Seann William Scott — was much more forthcoming.

When we asked point blank, “are you considering a ‘Green Hornet 2‘ yet?” He gave an emphatic “yes” response.

“You don’t make a movie like this without considering the sequel. Yeah, we have the whole plot planned out, which is kind of what we would have done in the first place.”

And while Sony, Moritz and others claim they welcomed director Michel Gondry with open arms, Goldberg said they needed major assurance at first.

“They definitely needed convincing. And he convinced the hell of out them with a fight sequence he brought in,” Goldberg noted. “None of us had ever seen anything like it. And he said, ‘You know what I can do. I’m going to prove to you that I can do things you might not think I can.’ And it worked. They literally said, ‘Michel Gondry? Never.” And he came in and blew everyone’s mind away, showing he could do action.”

“The Green Hornet” opens January 14, in post-conversion 3D. Though Goldberg has no problem with that. — Reporting by Drew Morton Stay tuned for our review later in the week.
