Exclusive: Evan Goldberg: We "Pressured The Studio" For 'Pineapple Express 2'; 'Superbad 2' Will "Never" Happen

Ok, so recently we received the annual “The Big Lebowski” sequel update (still not happening) and the bi-monthly “Arrested Development” update (still being teased, likely never gonna happen), so why not give you the bi-annual update on “Pineapple Express 2” and “Superbad 2”?

While we’ve heard rumblings that a ‘Pineapple’ sequel could happen, when The Playlist spoke to the film’s writer, Evan Goldberg, at Comic-Con, he admitted that the team on the film, producer Judd Apatow, stars Seth Rogen and James Franco, and director David Gordon Green, actively petitioned Columbia for a sequel on their own.

” ‘Pineapple 2’ is something that we pressured the studio to do for a while, and they require no pressure. Everybody wants to do it, it’s just we all have the chance after the success of those movies to do whatever they want, and everybody took that chance, and they made ‘Your Highness’ and Judd went and made [“Funny People”] and we went and made stuff. I would not be surprised if we all got back and made ‘Pineapple 2.’ We have the whole story planned out. But I don’t know, it’s still a toss up. Because that movie I’m very proud of, I don’t want to tamper with it. It kind of begs a sequel, but I don’t know. ‘Pineapple ‘2 is the most likely [Judd Apatow-produced project] with us all. We kind of made the classic mistake of people who had a successful film: we then booked everything we could because we thought it’d be our only chance. It still could be our only chance, but man are we booked.”

As for “Superbad 2,” which director Greg Mottola and most of the cast (Jonah Hill, Micheal Cera) have shrugged about in the past, Goldberg is much more straightforward about the writers’ (he and Seth Rogen) intentions. “Never, at any juncture in the history of life, have we considered ‘Superbad 2,’ ” he said.
