If you’re a regular reader of The Playlist you likely already know that many of us have been taken by “Short Term 12.” The SXSW winner (taking both the Grand Jury and Audience Award for Narrative Feature prizes) was named among our 13 Films You Should See In August and has pretty much been winning strong notices from critics and audiences alike on the festival circuit since Austin. Starring Brie Larson and John Gallagher Jr. (from HBO‘s “The Newsroom“), the film chronicles the lives of workers at a short-term foster care facility and sees strong performances from all involved (as evidenced in this exclusive clip). But today we have another peek at the movie from a musical angle.
Turn up your speakers and take a listen to “Vicious,” a hip hop cut from the soundtrack that also serves a double purpose and showcases the musical talents of one of the actors in the film. ” ‘Vicious’ was a collaboration between Keith Stanfield [lyrics, vocals] and Keith Milgaten [instrumentation]. It was created for a scene in the film when our main character really begins to lose control. The song is really raw and a bit unnerving, a musical representation of what’s going on in the head of Marcus [the character played by Keith Stanfield],” director Destin Cretton told the Playlist today.
After that you can check out an exclusive video by The Tree Ring performing the lovely “Welcome To Short Term 12” theme from the score by Joel P. West. It’s a nice tune accompanied by a rare look at the musicians playing it as well.
The crackling “Short Term 12” soundtrack will be released on August 20th with the film opening in limited release on August 23rd. Full soundtrack details, song and video below.
