Warner Bros. has officially moved its gritty special forces commando thriller “F.A.S.T.” into what is considered the summer movie season, as the project was originally set to debut in theaters on April 23, 2027, but has been delayed slightly to May 14, 2027 (what could be seen as a better spot in the studio’s slate next year). Audiences won’t have to wait too much longer, but the really neat update, as revealed by Deadline, is the impressive cast that is supporting it’s main lead, Brandon Skelar (“1923,” “The Housemaid”).
Those names alongside Sklenar, on the pic that features a skilled special forces commado lured by DEA agents to combat a drug cartel being projected by the CIA, include Sam Claflin (“Ebenezer”), Juliana Canfield (“Succession”), Trevante Rhodes (“The Predator,” “Moonlight”), LaKeith Stanfield (“The Girl In The Spider’s Web,” “Atlanta”), and Jason Clarke (“Heat 2,” “Zero Dark Thirty”).
An official logline for the WB thriller:
“A former special forces commando tapped by the DEA to lead a black-ops strike team against CIA-protected drug dealers.”
Ben Richardson directs from a script penned by Taylor Sheridan; he cut his teeth by previously helming episodes of “Yellowstone, “Tulsa King,” “Mayor of Kingstown,” “1923,” and “1883.” Richardson also knows his way around shooting gritty projects other than the Sheridan TV stable, having been the cinematographer of Sheridan’s excellent neo-Western noir film “Wind River,” “Those Who Wish Me Dead,” and the bulk of episodes for the HBO series “Mare of Easttown.” So, with that experience, we can envision “F.A.S.T.” being one of the more visually striking upcoming military actioners.
Sheridan’s footprint on TV/streaming is certainly impressive, but he is also well-known for his film scripts, so a movie like “F.A.S.T.” is most likely going to be closer to projects like his two “Sicario” films (a third one has been in development for a while now), and the special forces series “Lioness” (in its third season). He was recently enlisted by Paramount Skydance to help launch the first “Call of Duty” feature film with Peter Berg (“Lone Survivor”) in the director’s chair, and it is said to be set in the “Modern Warfare” (the fourth installment coming this fall) corner of the mature-focused popular military shooter video game franchise.
It’s unclear when WB will release a teaser trailer, but “F.A.S.T.” sounds like it could be a badass action vehicle for both Sklenar and Richardson, who worked together on the “Yellowstone” spinoff “1923” (directing an impressive 13 episodes). If this original pic (not based on any existing material) makes a splash with audiences, we wouldn’t be entirely shocked if there is sequel talk, or it could simply be a cool one-off.
