F For Fake: Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Hateful Eight’ Soundtrack Leak Is Bogus

null

While it seemed like a decent facsimile, some of us were skeptical from second one. Did the soundtrack to Quentin Tarantino’s possible-next movie “The Hateful Eight” leak as purported yesterday? Well, on some random message board—dubious enough as it is—a note featuring handwriting that approximated Tarantino’s own was posted, claiming to be the intended soundtrack for the filmmaker’s western.

Honestly, the handwriting at the end of the day looked apocryphal, and that’s the case. Sources inside the Tarantino camp tell us that yes, this is indeed a big, fat fake. You might have guessed, given the source. Tarantino initially had scrapped “The Hateful Eight” after the script leaked online—you can take a look at our spoiler-free piece on the screenplay here—feeling betrayed by the agents he sent it to.

But it appears he may have changed his mind, though that’s certainly not confirmed. It may be that Tarantino wants to give it a proper rewrite as what had leaked was said to be a first draft, but we hope he makes it. Set in the bitter-cold mountains of Wyoming in the post Civil War late 1880s, “The Hateful Eight” centers on a pair of bounty hunters, a prisoner, a would-be sheriff/ex Confederate soldier and a stage coach driver trying to get to a small town called Red Rock in the middle of a blizzard. Once they get there, deceit, tricks, mistrust and a whole new slew of shady characters complicate matters.

If it gets made, “The Hateful Eight” is said to include roles for actors like Bruce Dern, Samuel L. Jackson, Christoph Waltz, Michael Madsen and Tim Roth. But as rumors continue about the project and its future, that soundtrack is a carefully conjured hoax.
