You might be wondering why Sony has forever been trying to make another “Men In Black” movie, and the simple answer is: $$$. However you felt about “Men In Black 3,” it was the franchise’s highest earner to date, garnering $624 million worldwide. A few different approaches have been bandied about for a follow-up, including roping in Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill for some kind of hybrid between “Men In Black” and “21 Jump Street.” However, that seriously feels unlikely to ever happen, but last fall Sony put a “Men In Black” spinoff on the calendar. F. Gary Gray (“The Fate of the Furious,” “Straight Outta Compton“) is in negotiations to direct the movie. There are not many details about what this spinoff will actually be, or how it will connect to the original trilogy, but “Iron Man” duo Matt Holloway and Art Marcum will write the script that will introduce new characters into the ‘Men In Black’-verse. Wait, is that a thing now? Do I have to call it that? At any rate, Gray has had more than his fair share of blockbuster success, so Sony has chosen wisely.
“Men In Black: Origins” (or whatever) will open on June 14, 2019. [THR]
