'Family Romance, LLC' Trailer: Werner Herzog's New Feature Is A Japanese-Language Drama Debuting At Cannes

Werner Herzog has been a very busy man. The acclaimed filmmaker has two documentaries set to release this year (“Meeting Gorbachev” and “Nomad: In the Footsteps of Bruce Chatwin”). He’s also got a starring role in the upcoming “Star Wars” live-action TV series, “The Mandalorian.” And if that wasn’t eclectic enough, later this month, the director will premiere his Japanese-language feature “Family Romance, LLC” at the Cannes Film Festival.

Of all those projects the filmmaker has on his slate, “Family Romance, LLC” might be the most interesting. As seen in the first teaser, Herzog has written and directed a Japanese-language feature film about a man who runs a business that does something very unique. The short synopsis for the film does well to describe the overall plot, but also raises a bunch of questions: “Romance as a business. A man is hired to impersonate the missing father of a 12-year-old girl.” It’s rare to have a short, two-sentence description say so much and sell a film so well. You can’t deny that “Family Romance, LLC” seems like a pretty unique film.

“Family Romance, LLC” stars Yuichi Ishii and Mahiro Tanimoto.

“Family Romance, LLC” is set to have its world premiere as a Special Screening at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. A full worldwide release is probably forthcoming, but no details have been revealed.

Herzog is a filmmaker that has a varied filmography, with acting roles, documentaries, and narrative features. But somehow, after decades of doing this, he’s still able to surprise us.
