'Captain Marvel': Pinar Toprak Becomes The MCU's First Female Composer

When you think of modern film composers, there are some pretty big names associated with the title: John WilliamsHans Zimmer, Alexandre Desplat and Michael Giacchino, are just a few of the famous artists who come to mind. Sadly, there aren’t that many well-known female composers aside from a few like Rachel Portman, perhaps Lisa Gerrard and more recently, Mica Levi.

But we soon will be hearing, quite literally, a lot from composer Pinar Toprak. Toprak will be the latest addition to the behind-the-scenes efforts of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The musician will be leading the score for “Captain Marvel.”

“Captain Marvel” is proving to be a first for the studio in more ways than one. Obviously, the adventure will be Marvel’s inaugural movie starring a female superhero: its protagonist, Captain Marvel (Brie Larson). Additionally, Marvel’s also never featured a female filmmaker directing one of their blockbusters and while it’s a co-effort, “Captain Marvel” will be lead by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (“Half Nelson,” “Sugar,” “Mississippi Grind“).

Toprak will be the first female to ever compose the music for a Marvel film. “It’s an incredible honor to be a part of the Marvel Universe,” Toprak wrote Thursday on Instagram. “So many thoughts racing through my head. And the main one is gratitude.”

Toprak has been scoring films since 2003, her first feature a little-known movie called “Controlled Chaos.” Her other notable work includes the Syfy channel Superman prequel “Krypton” as well as the popular video game “Fortnite.” “Captain Marvel” co-stars Jude Law, Ben Mendelsohn, Gemma Chan, Annette Bening and returning MCU actors like Samuel L. Jackson, Clark Gregg, Lee Pace and Djimon Hounsou. The film will also take place in a non-linear sort of space. Everything with “Captain Marvel” is very much pre-Thanos: it takes place in the 1990s.
