Emily Blunt Says Marvel Never Called Her About 'Captain Marvel'

Emily Blunt‘s performance in “Edge of Tomorrow” turned a lot of heads in Hollywood. Her great, strong female lead performance, as muscular, war-torn hero Ritawas part of the reason why the film worked so well. The believability she brought to the testosterone-fueled action was surprising given that we didn’t know the 35-year-old actress had it in her to kick this much ass onscreen. This lead to an abundance of rumors claiming that she was a major contender for the title role in Marvel‘s upcoming “Captain Marvel.” Truth be told those rumors did start after a big internet push was made for Blunt to nab the role in the female-led superhero flick, which, after DC’s triumph with ‘Wonder Woman” last summer is set to be the first of its kind for Marvel.

However, as the old saying goes, “Rumors are mostly a projection of the individual who started them.” Blunt spoke this week to Screen Crush, saying she was well aware of the rumors surrounding “Captain Marvel” and even admitting she was most definitely interested, but she never received a call from Marvel or anybody involved with the project:

“Oh, no, nobody ever called me about it. [Laughs] It was all untrue!” Blunt said.

When asked if she would still consider playing a superhero for either Marvel or DC Blunt jokingly added that she’s already done the superhero thing, saying, “I mean, I think Mary Poppins is a superhero, so I’ll just say that she’s my superhero …. I think I’ve fulfilled that. I’ll say it’s her. Listen, she can fly, she has superpowers, she’s magical. I’ll just go with Mary Poppins.”

Fair enough.

Another interesting tidbit from that interview Blunt claiming to have no idea who got the role of Captain Marvel, when Hayes mentioned to her that Brie Larson was cast, Blunt responded by saying, “Ohhh, Brie is playing her. Awesome.” Regardless of whether she knew or not, it’s a shame to think that Marvel didn’t even bother calling the actress as Blunt was a no-brainer contender.

For the time being, she can be seen giving a great performance in husband John Krasinski‘s upcoming horror film “A Quiet Place” (due for release on April 6th), and this Christmas her “superhero” movie “Marry Poppins Returns” will be released nationwide. The sequel to the classic 1964 Disney musical, will also star Lin-Manuel Miranda and Meryl Streep.
