What’s there to say about French director Michel Hazanavicius? His two “OSS 117” films with Jean Dujardin are foreign cult comedies. And then the duo struck gold stateside with “The Artist,” which won Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor at the 2012 Oscars. But Hazanavicius hasn’t caught on with US audiences since then: not with 2014’s “The Search” with his wife Bérénice Bejo, or 2017’s “Redoubtable,” a regrettable biopic dramedy about Jean-Luc Godard.

And that brings us up to date for Hazanavicius’ latest: “Final Cut,” his remake of Shin’ichirô Ueda‘s cult hit “One Cut Of The Dead.” “Final Cut” actually opened up the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, but didn’t make its way stateside until now. And after it screens at the Tribeca Film Festival next weel, the film will finally reach US theaters next month.
Here’s a brief synopsis for “Final Cut,” courtesy of Kino Lorber:
Oscar® winner Michel Hazanavicius’ remake of Shin’ichirô Ueda’s cult hit One Cut of the Dead follows a chief (Romain Duris, L’Auberge Espagnole) charged with making a live, single-take, low-budget zombie flick in which the cast and crew, one by one, actually turn into zombies. Featuring hysterically unhinged performances from Oscar® nominee Bérénice Bejo (The Artist), Matilda Lutz (Revenge), and Finnegan Oldfield (Corsage), Final Cut is a sly love letter to the art of filmmaking and a blood-soaked, hilarious genre farce with a meta-to-the-max premise.
“Final Cut” stars Romain Duris, Bejo, Matilda Lutz, Finnegan Oldfield, and Yoshiko Takehara, who reprises her role from Ueda’s film. Other cast members include Grégory Gadebois, Sébastien Chassagne, Raphaël Quenard, and Lyès Salem.
After its run at Tribeca, “Final Cut” hits theaters everywhere on July 14. Watch a trailer for the film below.
