As we reported earlier in the week, Rob Siegel (screenwriter of “The Wrestler”) told audiences in the “Big Fan,” Q&A during the Independent Film Festival of Boston that the obsession portrait, starring Patton Oswalt, would hit theaters in August and that a distributor would be officially announced during the Tribeca Film Festival.
And he stuck to the plan, First Independent Pictures acquired the U.S. rights to the film, but the timeframe is still not exact with the film is looking at a release in either August or September. “I’m so psyched—and relieved—to have ‘Big Fan’ in First Independent’s hands,” Siegel said in a statement over at IndieWire. “Gary just gets it. He believes in this movie. And he knows exactly what to do with it to bring it audiences.” The film also stars Kevin Corrigan and Michael Rapaport in a small cameo.
First Independent Pictures recently released “Gigantic,” “Sixty Six” and “America The Beautiful” and in the past they’ve released “Everything’s Gone Green,” “The Great New Wonderful” and “New York Doll,” so no disrespect to them or “Big Fan,” but expect a small release (even “Gigantic” with Paul Dano and Zooey Deschanel only seemed to get as far as New York, L.A., Boston, Bethel, Connecticut, Austin and Dallas). Our IFFBoston review of “Big Fan,” soon, but we already called it, “an engaging, if rough-around-the-edges portrait.”
