It’s not everyday we get Aki Kaurismaki news, so it’s always extra special when word on a project from the Finnish filmmaker arrives. And fans will be plenty pleased to learn that the director’s first feature film in five years is now in the can, and ready for the big screen.
Screen Daily reports that “The Other Side Of Hope” is now slated to arrive in Finnish cinemas on February 3, 2017. If we were to make an educated guess, we’d presume this means the movie will make its international premiere at the Berlin Film Festival the same month, where distributors from the rest of the world can take a look, and decide whether or not to snap it up (the film currently has no North American distribution lined up).
Starring Sherwan Haji, Sakari Kuosmanen, Janne Hyytiäinen, Nuppu Koivu, Ilkka Koivula, Simon Hussein Al-Bazoon, Kaija Pakarinen, Kati Outinen, Tommi Korpela and Tuomari Nurmio, the film follows a Syrian refugee as he attempts to seek asylum in Helsinski, and crosses paths with traveling salesman. The film will mark the second installment in Kaurismaki’s port city trilogy, which kicked off with “Le Havre” in 2011.
