Director, provocateur and enfant terrible Harmony Korine is used to making big gear shifts from project to project so perhaps it should be no surprise that following the gritty, lo-fi and outrageous “Trash Humpers,” he has made a short film called “Act Da Fool” to help promote the fall campaign for fashion company Proenza Schouler.
The film, which will debut in September via IFC Films and the Sundance Channel, is about….well, we’ll let Korine himself explain it: “It’s about girls who sleep in abandoned cars and set things on fire. It’s about the great things in life. The stars in the sky and lots of malt liquor.” Okay, then. Designers Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough spill a bit more info about the project saying it’s a tribute to “youth and prep school—and kids rebelling against it.” The film was shot in Nashville by Korine who worked with photographer and artist Christopher Wool, who also shot the campaign for Proenza Schouler. Fascinatingly, the short is described as “a series of hazy 8mm vignettes, accompanied by a soft, lilting voice over, the girls skulk around schoolyards, spray graffiti, drink, smoke, pose and embrace, evoking the loneliness, confusion and overwhelming wonder of growing up.” The header is composed of some of the posters created by Sam Smith while after the jump, you can see a number of beautiful stills from the film.
As for “Trash Humpers,” in case it didn’t play in your town, the DVD will be released by Drag City in the U.S. and Warp in the UK in September. Warp has already penciled in a September 20th date, so the region 1 disc will probably drop around the same time. Hat tip to the unofficial Harmony Korine fansite for the links.
