Sometimes it takes more than one festival appearance to make an impression, and while “An Education” director Lone Scherfig‘s “Their Finest” won us over at TIFF, it’s going to get a second crack at creating early buzz with critics and audiences at the Sundance Film Festival this month. And the first trailer certainly indicates that anyone looking for a break from indie quirk or Important Movies, will get a warm, charming picture to curl up to.
Gemma Arterton leads the movie playing a woman who winds up helping the WWII effort by becoming the unlikely screenwriter of a movie that’s being made to boost morale and convince the Americans to join the war. Here’s the official synopsis:
1940, London, the Blitz; with the country’s morale at stake, Catrin (Gemma Arterton), an untried screenwriter, and a makeshift cast and crew, work under fire to make a film to lift the nation’s flagging spirits; and inspire America to join the war. Partnered alongside fellow screenwriter, Buckley (Sam Claflin) and eccentric actor Ambrose Hilliard (Bill Nighy), the trio set off to make a film that will warm the hearts of the nation and capture the imagination of the American population.
Co-starring Bill Nighy, Sam Claflin, Richard E. Grant, and Jack Huston, “Their Finest” opens in the U.K. on April 21st, and will be released in the U.S. on March 24th.
