How do you adapt a seemingly unadaptable property? The Apple TV+ series “Foundation” finally brings Isaac Asimov’s classic set of stories to life. It’s been a long process for material constantly stuck in the confines of development hell. Bounding from studio to network and back again, the project seemed dead until Apple came onboard.

“Foundation” finds its creative center in showrunner David S. Goyer. The multi-hyphenate has been crucial in shaping DCEU’s past two decades — taking on writing duties for “Man of Steel” and “Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice.” Goyer’s background in sci-fi and action genres ensures he can maintain the larger-than-life narrative without sacrificing important points. The showrunner is also well aware of how streaming is driving new audience outreach, most recently producing Amazon’s “The Tomorrow War.” The title, acquired for Prime Video, proved to be a hit for the service.
Casting on the series aims to create something that both viewers and critics alike can appreciate. Jared Harris takes on the role of professor Hari Seldon; his work to discover and mitigate an event with galactic ramifications sets the story in motion. The actor is building off an acclaimed performance in 2019’s “Chernobyl.” Lee Pace acts as a counterpoint in the role of Brother God. The galactic emperor faces an uncertain future, made even more uncomfortable by Seldon’s discoveries. TV has already presented an influential medium for Pace; his work on “Pushing Daisies” as well as “Halt and Catch Fire” continue to win over new fans. Lou Llobell, Leah Harvey, Laura Birn, Terrence Mann, Cassian Bilton, and Alfred Enoch also star in the project.
