Reboots, remakes, and revivals are the order of the day in Hollywood. And if you can somehow get a big name to help develop that reboot, remake, or revival, then that’s even better. Luckily for Hulu, the streaming service was able to nab Mindy Kaling to help co-create the new series “Four Weddings and a Funeral.”
The series is a reimagining of the classic 1994 romantic comedy of the same name, which was written by Richard Curtis and featured the start to Hugh Grant’s reign as the King of mid-’90s rom-coms. Following a similar premise, Kaling’s “Four Weddings and a Funeral” follows the stories of four college friends that reunite for a wedding and find out that each of their lives isn’t necessarily as great as they make it seem. And as the name implies, there are actually a total of four weddings, with a funeral thrown in for good measure.
The series stars Nathalie Emmanuel, Rebecca Rittenhouse, Brandon Mychal Smith, and John Reynolds. Joining Kaling as a co-creator on this new limited series is Matt Warburton, who is probably best known for his work on “The Simpsons,” but he also worked with Kaling on her series “The Mindy Project.”
Hulu’s “Four Weddings and a Funeral” arrives on the streaming service on July 31.
Here’s the synopsis:
Maya, the young communications director for a New York senatorial campaign, receives a wedding invitation from her college schoolmate now living in London. She leaves her professional and personal life behind, in favor of traveling to England and reconnecting with old friends and ends up in the midst of their personal crises. Relationships are forged and broken, political scandals exposed, London social life lampooned, love affairs ignited and doused, and of course there are four weddings… and a funeral.
