French auteur Bruno Dumont has busied himself in recent years with films about Joan of Arc. Now, he teams up with French star actress Léa Seydoux for his latest film, “France,” fresh off its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival this July.
Dumont’s latest follows a celebrity journalist, played by Seydoux, as she juggles her career, fame, and personal life as she chases ever-higher ratings. When her life flips upside-down after a car accident, the TV personality must reckon with her lifestyle and whether its glossy sheen is worth its lack of dignity.
Along Seydoux, “France” also stars Blanche Gardin, Benjamin Biolay, Emanuele Arioli, and Juliane Köhler. Gaëtan Amiel, Jewad Zemmar, and Marc Bettinelli round out the main cast.
Dumont writes and directs “France,” as he has for all of his feature films. David Chambille, who worked with Dumont on 2019’s “Joan Of Arc,” returns as cinematographer. Nicolas Bier, best known in France for his work in TV and shorts, is the film’s editor.

After its world premiere in competition for the Palme d’Or at Cannes in July, “France” had its French release in August before it made its way around the festival circuit. The film was one of three to star Seydoux to premiere at Cannes 2021, the other two films being Arnaud Desplechin‘s “Deception” and Ildikó Enyedi‘s “The Story Of My Wife.” Seydoux also stars in the new James Bond film “No Time To Die” and Wes Anderson‘s “The French Dispatch” this year.
